Trane 80V Glow Plug

Problem Description:  Installed a new furnace control board (CNT05159) and the glow plug went out two days later.

Observed Symptoms:  

  • The old control board would not energize gas valve.
  • The new control board functions correctly but the glow plug does not energize.
  • There is no resistance reading across the glow plug.

Solution:  

  • The new control board came with a new glow plug that did not get installed.
  • Installed the new glow plug that came with the control board.

Additional Information:  

  • Several manufacturers, including Trane, used an 80V glow plug in some of their gas furnaces.
  • The old control board sends 80V out to the glow plug.
  • The new control board sends 120V out to the glow plug.
  • The new control board came as a kit which included a new board and a new 120V glow plug.
