Re: Outdoor Fan Not Running

The compressor operates on a call for cooling but the outdoor fan motor does not operate.

Qty Possible Causes:
4 Bad Condenser Motor
2 Bad Fan Capacitor
Bad Fan-Cycling Switch

CHECKOUT:

1. Check Motor

  • Disconnect power to the outdoor unit by pulling the service disconnect or by turning the breaker off.
  • Check the motor bearings by spinning the fan blade.
    • Fan Blade Tight / Won't Turn = Bad Condenser Fan Motor

2. Check Capacitor

  • Disconnect power to the outdoor unit by pulling the service disconnect or by turning the breaker off.
  • Remove the wires from the fan capacitor & check capacitance.
    • Capacitor Reading < 80% of Rating = Bad Capacitor

3. Check for Fan-Cycle Switch

  • Look for a fan-cycling pressure switch or temperature control installed on the unit.
    • No Switch or Control --> Step 4. Check Operation
    • Switch or Control Installed
      • Hook-Up Refrigerant Gauges
      • Energize a call for cooling from the thermostat.
      • Monitor system head pressure as the compressor operates.
        • Fan should start at approx. 400 psig.
          • Fan Doesn't Start
            • Disconnect power to the outdoor unit by pulling the service disconnect or by turning the breaker off.
            • Temporarily bypass the Fan-Cycling control.
            • Re-apply power to the unit.
              • No Fan --> Step 4. Check Operation
              • Fan = Bad Fan-Cycling Switch

4. Check Operation

  • Energize a call for cooling from the thermostat.
  • Ensure that the contactor on the outdoor energizes.
    • Fan Starts --> Check Fan Motor amperage and compare to nameplate rating.
    • Fan Doesn't Start --> Check for 230VAC between the Black and Red wire of the fan plug.
      • Voltage + No Fan --> Check Motor Temperature
        • Voltage + No Fan + Hot Motor --> Allow motor to cool then recheck/
        • Voltage + No Fan + Cool Motor = Bad Condenser Fan Motor
