A PTAC Heat Pump typically uses the compressor for initial heating and electric strip heaters for backup heat.

Unlike a standard heat pump, the compressor and electric heaters never operate at the same time. It is one or the other.

► The PTAC heat pump does not have a defrost mode. A sensor on the outdoor coil measures the coil temperature. When the coil temperature gets to 20 deg. the control board stops the compressor and switches to electric heat mode.

CHECKOUT:

1. Check Operation

• Make sure the thermostat is set correctly and calling for Heat.
• Confirm that the compressor starts and produces warm air.
  • If the outdoor air temperature is below 20 deg. the unit may go directly to electric heat mode.

2. Check Refrigerant

• There are no refrigerant test ports from the factory, so the only way to check refrigerant is by "Freezing" and "Suction Line Temperature".
• Check the Suction Line Temperature near the compressor.
  • Warm suction line may indicate low freon.
• Look at the metering device for freezing.
  • Freezing metering device may indicate low freon.
