A/C FREEZING-UP
SYMPTOMS:
- Visible Ice On the Coil or Lineset
- Visible Ice at Outdoor Unit
- No Airflow from Registers
WHAT THE CUSTOMER SHOULD DO: If the customer notices ice on the coil cabinet, on the lineset, or in the outdoor unit they should do the following:
1. Turn the System Off
- Turn the thermostat System switch to the "Off" position.
- Continuing to operate the unit will cause the freezing to get worse and may cause serious equipment damage.
2. Turn the Fan On
- Turn the thermostat Fan switch to the "On" position.
- This will help to thaw the coil and also helps keep dripping water blown away from the motor.
- BE PREPARED FOR WATER!
- When a badly frozen coil thaws it will generally drip water that either misses or over-runs the drain pan.
- Have towels ready, especially when the coil is in a closet or above a ceiling.
3. Check the Air Filter
- A dirty air filter is the most common cause of coil freeze-up.
- Depending on the location of the filter, it may not be possible to remove the filter until after the ice melts.
- When the coil completely thaws, and with a clean air filter, put the thermostat system and fan switch back to normal.
- If the coil continues to freeze-up - Schedule a Service Appointment.
